There are two types of CME examinations for which you may claim credit hours in Category I of the Physician's Recognition Award of the American Medical Association.
- Quarterly Examinations consisting of 50 questions of interest to the general orthopaedic surgeon. Quarterly exams may be obtained in the April, July, October, and January issues of The Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery, or can be taken online. You may claim up to 10 credits per exam upon successful completion. In addition, you can claim up to 10 credits towards the ABOS Maintenance of Certification (MOC) requirement of 20 self-assessment examinations (SAE) credits over a three-year cycle, but only if you take the online general exam.
- Subspecialty Examinations consisting of 8 questions each in individual subspecialties. You may claim up to 4 credits per exam upon successful completion. Offered only online.
Quarterly Exams - Online
The Quarterly Online exams may be taken for Continuing Medical Education credit or for practice and general review. To benefit most from this educational experience and qualify for CME credit, please observe the following instructions:
- Read the Purpose Statement and be certain that these purposes meet your individual learning needs.
- These CME questions have been derived from the articles published in preceding monthly issues of the American Volume of The Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery. A careful study of each article should yield the best response to each question.
- Read each question carefully and identify the best answer.
- To qualify for CME credit, a score of more than 50% correct must be achieved on the examination. You must complete the entire examination before submitting it for scoring and feedback. If you cannot answer all 50 questions at one sitting, you may save the examination online and return to it when convenient. You will learn your results immediately after submitting your exam. If you have achieved a passing grade, you will be able to see the preferred answers for each question and you can easily link to the point of the original text containing the correct answer, which is highlighted for you. If you have not received a passing grade, you will be asked to continue to take the examination until it is successfully completed. As long as the examination has not expired (at the end of the quarter), you can continue to take it until you achieve your goal. Your CME award certification is available for download as soon as you pass the exam.
- You may claim up to 10 credits for successful completion of each exam. In addition, the electronic quarterly CME examination has been approved by the ABOS as a self-assessment examination. Thus, with each successful completion of an online general quarterly examination, you can claim up to 10 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™ toward your three-year requirement of 120 credits and these 10 credits can also be claimed by you to help fulfill the new ABOS Maintenance of Certification requirement of 20 SAE credits during the same cycle.
Price and deadline: The charge for the online quarterly exam is $50 per quarter, or $185 per year, and must be paid prior to taking the examination. If you are taking the exam for CME credit, you will be prompted to supply credit card information at the appropriate time. There is no fee for taking the exam for review or study purposes only.
